Today, I am joined by Jonathan Orcutt of Driven Landscapes Franchising. I met Jonathan on a Facebook Landscaping Group. I still like to keep my finger on the pulse of the landscape industry since selling my landscape company last year. Jonathan came on the show to give us some insight to being a small business owner and also some information on buying a franchise.

Jonathan started his company in 2012 at 26 years old. He worked eight years in corporate America, but decided that he wanted to control his own future. He felt that the landscape industry was very fragmented, like the wild west. Jonathan said that the landscape industry is currently at $78B.

Jonathan wanted to build a million dollar company, and two years later, after meeting that goal, he wanted to share his passion of working with small business owners by offering franchises. He said that he was able to become scalable and obtain successful results by using systems and marketing that work.

“Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure” – Tony Robbins. Jonathan has earned his first million dollars, but does not feel completely fulfilled. He wants to share his success with other business owners.

For people looking to start a franchise, Jonathan said that some of the benefits will be the same in most industries. The first thing is buying power. Business owners will be able to able to obtain discounts on products and services they will need to run their business.

Second, you will get a blueprint on how to run and scale your business. There is no guesswork. You will be able to follow the steps that helped Jonathan’s (or any) franchise grow, eliminating potential mistakes.

Next, you will have consulting along the way that will help you make decisions and grow your revenue. Jonathan believes in mentorship. He works with a mentor himself. I then mention the book Greater Than Yourself by Steve Farber. Make sure to mentor up and down.

At the end of the day, when you buy a franchise, you will have a turnkey business where you will not have to reinvent the wheel. You will be able to grow your business faster and cheaper. I think that Jonathan and I coined new term. The Three M’s: Manual, Mentorship and Money Power. That is what you get when you buy a franchise.

On the flip side, franchise owners need to pay a royalty. But that can be offset by the savings from the buying power and growth in revenue. The revenue growth should outweigh the royalties.

I finally ask what drives Jonathan. He said that family comes first. His wife and daughter mean the world to him. He also said that he has a strong entrepreneurial passion, which is his internal drive. He really wanted to pay it forward and help other small business owners.

Jonathan can be reached on his website and through Facebook.
